Learnings, teachings, and practical advice for your journey on the ancient path as you follow Jesus and live out God’s purpose for your life.
Ask for the ancient paths and walk in it
What if there's an ancient way that we can return to?
To a life as God intended. One for our benefit and for the benefit of others. Good news to our modern culture and an antidote to our ways of living that leave us dry, wishing for more.
Restoring the world to the Kingship of God
To our modern world with presidents, governors, and other various elected officials, the idea of a king feels foreign. We like our autonomy and take it for granted—self-assured in our ability to run our lives without needing anyone to tell us what to do. And the moment some version of authority attempts to thwart our direction, we bristle like a militant group of Antifa thugs.
But what if our modern world is misguided?
The whole world has forgotten God
We spend our time erecting statues and worshipping digital gods to stave off the lonely void that fills our souls. Slowly, we embrace the madness, distancing ourselves from the memories of our childhood that taught us ancient stories of the good way.
Echoes of the Spirit still dwell
You go through life, with it’s ups and downs, and if you’re fortunate, by the time you’re an adult you’ve had time to deal with the childhood wounds and trauma you experienced growing up. None of us are immune to pain and disfunction.
But no matter how much effort we expend to heal from the wounds, some of them are still there, silently lurking in the shadows of our psyche—waiting for the right moment to raise their ugly head and strike in moments that trigger us.
How I found Jesus in a sukkah
Every year in the fall, Jewish people are preparing to celebrate the fall feasts written about in the Bible. From the blowing of the shofar on Yom Teruah (also known as Rosh Hashanah), to the day of fasting on Yom Kippur, to the culmination of these feasts in the seven day celebration known as Sukkot. In fact, Sukkot is so momentous, that there’s an eighth day added on to the end to celebrate how God gave the Torah to the ancient Israelite people.
Reminder—You are living in exile
This place is not your country; not your true home. Your soul longs to return, never quite finding itself satisfied in the current state of affairs. It aches for wholeness, for freedom, for a rich sense of connectedness to God and others.
But you are living in exile.
If the vision tarries, wait for it—God is the one who makes things grow
How often do we put undue pressure on ourselves trying to do great things for God? We push and strive, and try to achieve the vision and desire he’s put in our heart.
What is the church?
Depending on your experience, you probably have different words racing through your mind when you hear the word "church."
Hypocrites.
Unloving.
Angry.
Legalistic.
Exclusionary.
Judgemental.
The list goes on and on.
How we started (stumbled into) keeping the Sabbath
“I Sabbath on Sunday.” It's what always came to mind when I would hear someone mention the Sabbath. I mean we go to church on Sunday, Sunday is Sabbath. Right?
Life by the spirit cannot be turned into a methodology
We want so desperately to turn the life of the spirit into a methodology that can be prescribed and followed, negating our need to commit our lives to hearing his voice and following wherever that may lead.
Faith is the fruit of a seed planted in the depth of a lifetime
What is faith? Is it a one time belief that grants us access to God’s kingdom? Is it a magic formula to save us from certain calamity. Or is it a seed that has to be watered, tended to, acted upon?
Coming to terms with the great unknowing through the dark night of the soul
For as long as I can remember, I’ve despised not knowing. At times it’s driven me to perfectionism, wanting to get everything just right, crossing all the t’s and dotting all the i’s.
Entrepreneur or pastor—have we missed the mark?
With recent scandals surrounding Carl Lentz and Hillsong Church, Bill Hybels, and Tulian Tchividjian I can’t get the church out of my mind. These events leave me frustrated at how many (maybe the majority) of Christian leaders seem to be missing the point in their vocation as pastor.
